What does Youth Advocacy Day mean to you? On January 29, 2016 hundreds of young people and allies of The Mockingbird Society came together at our state capitol in Olympia to advocate for systems change for vulnerable foster youth and youth who’ve experienced homelessness.

I had the great honor of following around a collection of youth from the Youth Advocates Ending Homelessness program to get their opinions of what YAD really meant to them. Some of the most eye opening answers were just highlighting the fact that today, youth voices are being taken seriously. Laws are changing and a real difference is going on in the world.

What Youth Advocacy day means to me is: A day where hundreds of youth from across the state can rally and be recognized by state leaders. It is a day of community and comradery under the banner of advocacy, and it is a great day to eat Mecconi’s subs, an Olympia tradition!
